Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

LEEP stand for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. LEEP is the most common procedure used in the United States to treat and diagnosis pre-cancerous conditions of the cervix. The procedure uses a very thin wire loop attached to a high frequency electrical generator to remove the pre-cancerous tissue from the cervix. At the same time the procedure seal the ends of the blood vessels that were cut during the procedure to control and minimize bleeding. In addition to treating the pre-cancerous condition, a LEEP provides a specimen that could be evaluated in the laboratory to confirm the diagnosis and make certain that no cancer was missed. This is one of the main advantages that a LEEP has over the other procedures used to treat precancerous conditions of the cervix.
