Contact Dermatitis (Irritant or Allergic Vulvitis)

Contact dermatitis is a rash that results when the skin makes contact with an irritating substance. The reaction may either be a type of chemical burn or an allergic reaction and may develop very quickly and severely or more gradually. The irritating substances may be man-made chemicals (soap, detergent, preservatives) or "natural" substances such as urine or stool. The irritation can occur on any part of the body but because the skin of the vulva is moist and frequently subjected to friction while sitting and moving, the vulva can be easily injured and can be quite sensitive to substances that may not irritate tougher skin on other parts of the body.
