Human papilloma virus (HPV) testing

Since HPV testing is so accurate why doesn't everyone get HPV testing?

Because HPV infection is so common in young people and because cancer of the cervix is so uncommon, routine screening with a Pap test and an HPV test is not done in women under 30. As women get older, the chance that they are HPV positive gets smaller and their risk of getting cancer of the cervix is greater so HPV testing is more useful. In women over the age of 30, the current recommendation of the American Cancer Society (and almost everyone else) is that combined testing with a Pap and an HPV testis the preferred way to screen for cervical cancer.
