HHuman papilloma virus (HPV) testing

Are there other situations in which testing for HPV can be very helpful?

In women with an equivocal (ASC-US) Pap test, a negative HPV test is reassuring that the woman's cancer risk is negligible. A woman with an ASC-US Pap test but with a negative HPV test, is at the same risk for cancer and precancer of the cervix as someone whose Pap test is negative but does not have an HPV test result. In women who have been treated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, cervical dysplasia) or who have CIN and are being followed without treatment, a negative HPV test is much more reassuring that the disease has gone away than a negative Pap test or a negative colposcopy. This is because the Pap test has a high false negative rate (the test is normal but the patient actually has disease) and a negative HPV test is more reassuring that the disease is gone.
