Vulvar Lichen Planus

How is erosive lichen planus treated?

Erosive lichen planus is treated with various creams and ointments. Occasionally pills or injections may be needed. The choice of medication will depend on how each woman response to treatment. Medication will control erosive lichen planus but will not cure it. You may need to be treated for a long time or even for the rest of your life. However, erosive lichen planus sometimes comes and goes on its own and will occasionally disappear completely. We do not know why erosive lichen planus sometimes gets better by itself. Vulvar care measures (avoiding putting irritating things on the vulva) are important to reduce symptoms. When the vagina is involved, specially compounded medications may be needed for insertion into the vagina. These are usually only available in a specialist (compounding) pharmacy. Vaginal dilators may be used to prevent scarring. If scarring has occurred, vaginal dilators may be used to keep the scarring from getting worse.
