SQUAMOUS CELL HYPERPLASIA (Lichen Simplex Chronicus)

How is squamous cell hyperplasia (lichen simplex chronicus) treated?

The treatment of squamous cell hyperplasia (lichen simplex chronicus) requires several steps, all of them designed to stop the itch scratch cycle. The most important step is identifying what irritant or allergen triggered (or is continuing to trigger) the itching in the first place. Since more than one irritant may be involved and identifying specific irritants may be very difficult, all potential irritants must be eliminated (vulvar care measures). The woman needs to soak in a sitz bath or tub with plain water twice a day. This moisturizes the skin and soothes open sores. After soaking a strong steroid ointment should be applied to the skin. Scratching and rubbing must be stopped at all costs. While you might be able to control yourself during the daytime scratching at night is another matter. It is also important to take medication at night to make sure you sleep soundly without scratching. If stress is contributing to the problem, it must be addressed.
