Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus

How is lichen sclerosus treated?

lichen sclerosus is treated with strong steroid creams and ointments. Occasionally, depending on a woman's response to steroid creams other medications may be needed. Medication will control lichen sclerosus but will not cure it. However, the itching caused by lichen sclerosus can be very well controlled and the skin of the vulva can be returned to its normal appearance. Unfortunately, once scarring of the vulva has occurred these changes cannot be reversed with medication. You will need to be treated for a long time or even for the rest of your life. Vulvar care measures (avoiding putting irritating things on the vulva) are important to reduce symptoms and prevent lichen sclerosus from becoming worse. Anything that irritates the skin in a woman with lichen sclerosus can cause the lichen sclerosus to become worse. Vaginal dilators may be used to prevent scarring. If scarring has occurred, vaginal dilators may be used to keep the scarring from getting worse but should not be used if they cause pain. .
