Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus

Can lichen sclerosus of the vulva cause cancer?

Many chronic skin conditions that cause inflammation of vulva are associated with a slight increased risk of cancer of the vulva. The risk that a woman with long-standing lichen sclerosus will develop cancer of the vulva is about 3% to 5%. This is one reason why regular visits to your doctor (preferably a vulvar expert) are important. If you notice any new raised, bleeding or non-healing areas on the vulva you should go to your doctor right away.
