Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine

When is the best time to be vaccinated against HPV?

The best time to be vaccinated is before you have a risk for becoming infected. Since HPV is spread by genital skin to skin contact, it is possible to become infected by "hooking up" without having sexual intercourse. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend that the best time to be vaccinated is at the age of 11 or 12 years but can be as early as 9 years old. Someone who was not vaccinated before becoming sexually active should still be vaccinated as soon as possible. Once someone has been infected by one or more of the HPV types in the vaccine may lose the benefit that they get from that portion of the vaccine. The vaccine is approved for use until your 27th birthday.
