Human papilloma virus (HPV)

Will my HPV ever go away?

Although we don't know whether HPV ever goes away, with time, the test for HPV does turn negative by itself without treatment in more than 90% of people. 50% turn negative in 8 months, 66% in 1 year, 80% in 2 years and 90% in 3 years. Once the test turns negative, your chances of developing cancer or precancer and the likelihood that you will transmit the virus to a partner go down almost to the level of someone who has never been infected with HPV at all. On the other hand, the longer you have an HPV infection, the greater the risk that you will develop precancer and cancer.
