Human papilloma virus (HPV)

Why should I test for HPV? Isn't Pap testing good enough?

HPV testing is important because having HPV will tell who is at greater risk for cancer of the cervix and following these women more carefully means that they can be treated before cancer develops. Because HPV testing is so much better than Pap testing in discovering who is at risk for cancer and precancer of the cervix it gives us a much earlier warning about who needs to be evaluated. Also, testing negative for HPV is tremendously reassuring that you do not have cancer and precancer of the cervix (much more reassuring than having a negative Pap test).
