Human papilloma virus (HPV)

Will I pass HPV to my partner?

HPV is transmitted through genital skin to skin contact so it is possible to get the virus from just "hooking up" without having intercourse. Condoms provide some protection but because couples who use condoms are still making skin to skin contact in areas not covered by the condom, someone who is in a relationship with a partner that has HPV will almost certainly get infected even if they use a condom every single time. HPV is so common among young people that a woman who has had only one lifetime partner has a 50% chance of being infected within 3 years of beginning that relationship. The more time that has passed between breaking up with your old partner and when you start with your new partner the less likely you are to pass the infection to them.
